In the refurbished spaces, a multidisciplinary research group is developing innovative building materials for architecture and design using regional raw materials such as rice, seaweed, salt and even construction waste. The new timber building with its exceptional curved roof covering the café, exhibition area and 360-degree cinema belongs to the Swedish National Museum for Science and Technology. It is situated on the museum grounds in a previously unused courtyard. In terms of scale, it refers to the neighbouring exhibition halls...

Near the Atlantic coast, just under 40 minutes west of Bilbao, lies the village of Labarrieta. A hundred years ago, mining dominated this hilly landscape. Today, the village feels secluded; the mines have long since closed. Nestled between the forest and a main road stands a small 16th century church. It too had to close due to scanty population and lack of demand. Working closely with the client, the team at the architectural practice Garmendia & Cordero, has saved the chapel from demolition. With minimal alterations to the existing structure, they have transformed the old place of worship into a unique residential property, giving it a new lease of life...
