To kick off the year, we took a look at our Bingo Card for 2026.

Big Tech supports it. Hollywood is pushing back.

Two months later, the implications are becoming clearer.

Here’s what stands out for us at BioID:

❗Responsibility is moving upstream: Age assurance at the OS level changes how trust is built. For identity-tech providers, this signals a long-term shift toward ecosystem-embedded age signals.

❗Privacy and usability are taking priority: The law avoids mandatory ID uploads or heavy parental consent flows. This aligns with what we advocate at BioID: verify age brackets, not full identity.

❗Hollywood’s concerns show a UX gap: One universal device-level age signal could disrupt family profiles and content settings. Age assurance isn’t just a compliance issue, it’s a design challenge.

❗A likely global ripple effect: California often sets the tone. Expect more regions to explore OS-level age signaling as momentum grows.

❗Biometrics remain optional, but pressure is rising: AB 1043 relies on self-declared age at setup. But as platforms face increasing accountability, stronger proof-of-age methods will gain importance. This is where privacy-preserving biometrics can play a critical role.
