OpenTelemetry gets talked about mostly in the context of distributed traces. If you're running infrastructure monitoring with Icinga, you might have assumed OTel isn't really relevant to you.
That assumption is worth revisiting.

OpenTelemetry is also a metrics standard - and in 2026, virtually every observability platform accepts OTLP data natively. Prometheus, Grafana Mimir, Datadog, Elasticsearch, VictoriaMetrics, New Relic, Dynatrace, Splunk. That's not a list of specific integrations. That's what "any OTLP-compatible backend" actually means in practice.

With the OTLPMetricsWriter in Icinga 2 v2.16, your check performance data speaks that standard. One configuration object. No separate integrations to maintain for each backend.

If you're interested in technology and looking for a practical entry into the field (rather than a purely academic one) this might be the right fit. Some background in software development or monitoring is a plus, but not a requirement. Good German is, though - the vocational school program runs entirely in German.

We're open to applicants from different starting points: finishing school, switching careers, or stepping away from university. As long as you're passionate about tech and open source, we'd be happy to have a chat.

Going to All Things Open was one of the better calls we made last year.
As a Germany-based company, Europe is mostly our home base for events. That's why we were curious what the open source community looks like in the US. We had really cool conversations and also came back with actual collaborations, including a cooperation with Learn Linux TV.

The talk itself covers monitoring at scale: rule-based configuration that applies the right checks automatically as your environment grows, a built-in clustering architecture with no third-party dependencies, and a Kubernetes module that uses push-based monitoring from inside the cluster rather than polling from the outside.

Two of our trainees, Sasha and Alex, just shipped the demotour module to our public demo and it's now live in production.

It's an interactive tutorial that guides users through Icinga Web: the layout, monitoring basics, problem handling, and adding a new host via the Director. The guides are independent and modular, so new tours can be added over time.

They built this mostly independently, halfway through their second year with us. We're super proud of them.
