After several months interacting with the associates through whatsapp and zoom, we had our first meeting at La Fé bank with all the security protocols for social distancing. We are grateful to God for this great meeting. The plan is to take small steps every day in the face-to-face area of our microfinance ministry.
SI Microfinance has been busy in this pandemic time. Our bank meetings have come to a halt, but we continue to communicate with the women through encouraging text messages, drive by visits from the car, and bi-weekly food distribution to those in need. Many households have no income in this time because of the curfews and social distancing measures that are imposed by the government. This past Wednesday distributed food for a second time.
In Los Higos: A few days before Wednesday’s food distribution, one of the women approached the bank coordinator telling her they had no food in their home. Neither women knew that we would bring food on Wednesday. We were all reminded of God’s plan and His timing!
We have also extended a no payment period for our women with loans. The penalties and interest are not being collected or accumulated at this time. Any payments made towards loans goes directly to the principle.
In El Amor: We are also supporting a coordinator who has two children. She and her husband have a business, but they have been closed for 40 days due to the virus. She has a loan and she would have needed to use all her savings to pay the loan. She and her husband are very grateful.

Our 2nd training this year was a collective effort of Katia, Heidy and Melody to introduce the “envelope system” as a tool for managing personal finances. We provided an interactive exercise to experience the use of this tool. As we talked about reining in, managing and controlling spending to fit the household income, we gave practical advice of managing money. Each woman left with a personal envelope system of her own to implement this tool throughout the next months. We also spent time working on individual personal budgets, based on the homework from last training of keeping a spending log. We will continue to encourage and work with all the women in our weekly meetings in understanding and implementing personal money management.
