Across historic cities, coastal landscapes, and cultural sites, rising exposure to climate-related hazards is reshaping how heritage is understood, managed, and protected. Floods, heatwaves, and other extreme events are no longer distant threatsβ€”they are directly affecting the fabric of cultural identity.

In this context, disaster risk management is shifting beyond response toward preparedness, capacity-building, and long-term resilience. The question is shifting from how we react to disasters to how we anticipate and reduce their impact before they occur.

At the 3rd International conference on " Landscapes Across the Mediterranean - Crossmed Conference" in Alexandria, Egypt (Bibliotheca Alexandrina & AASTMT Arab Academy For Science, Technology and Maritime Transport), this perspective is reflected in ongoing discussions on rethinking heritage protection in the Mediterranean under accelerating environmental change. It emphasizes strengthening readiness as a foundational approach to safeguarding heritage for the future.
