مرض السكري من النوع الأول يُصنّف مرض السكريّ من النوع الأول كأحد اضطرابات المناعة الذاتيّة (بالإنجليزية: Autoimmune disease)؛ إذ يقوم الجسم بمهاجمة الخلايا المُنتِجة للإنسولين في البنكرياس عن طريق الخطأ ممّا يؤدي إلى توقّف إنتاج الإنسولين، وعلى الرغم من ارتباط مرض السكري من النوع الأول ببعض العوامل التي ترفع فرص الإصابة به، إلّا أنّ يتمكن العلماء لم يتمكنوا إلى الآن من تحديد المسبّب الرئيسيّ الذي يعمل على تحفيز ردّة الفعل المناعيّة، ويُعتقد أنّ فرصة الإصابة به تزداد مع توفر العوامل البيئيّة والاستعداد الجينيّ، كما أنّه يُعتقد أنّ وجود تاريخ عائليّ للإصابة بالمرض يرفع من خطر الإصابة به، مع الإشارة إلى أنّ معظم المصابين بالمرض ليس لديهم تاريخ عائليّ للإصابة، ومن الجدير بالذكر أنّه تم استبعاد أن يكون للنظام الغذائي ونمط الحياة المتبع دور في الإصابة بمرض السكري من النوع الأول.
