Eritrea has been under a dictatorship from day 1, led by Isaias Afewerki. The country is known for its lack of independent media, with all newspapers banned and journalists arrested or detained. Human rights organizations report widespread forced labor and conscription, restrictions on freedom of expression, opinion, and faith, and no independent judiciary. Elections have not been held since independence in 1993, and the 1997 constitution guaranteeing civil rights has not been implemented.
