How does the body fight back?

Your body has a part inside of you that fights viruses and other things that might hurt you. This is called your immune system.
The immune system makes it harder for the virus to exist. It does this by raising the temperature of the body or giving you a fever. When this happens you probably will not feel very well, but it is a way your body fights to make you better.

The immune system also has special cells that track down and kill the virus. These cells also remember what they had to do to fight the virus so that the body can do it again in the future.

It is hard for people to get the same disease twice. However, viruses are good at changing which is why you can get a cold or the flu every year.

You can help your body by washing your hands and avoiding touching hard surfaces like countertops. Viruses cannot live long by themselves outside of the body.
