For over a decade, Mohamed Mahdy has documented life in Wadi El-Qamar, known locally as Moon Valley, a neighborhood in Alexandria where more than 70,000 residents live within 15 meters of a cement factory that fills their homes with toxic dust. He didn’t arrive as an outside observer. He lives nearby, has asthma himself, and was drawn into the story in 2016 when a resident asked him to document her dying sister’s illness.

This talk moves beyond the images to the questions that shaped them: How do you photograph a community’s suffering without reducing them to it? How does a photographer move someone from subject to protagonist, someone with agency over how their story is told? And what does responsible, sustained documentation of trauma actually require, from archival research that helped prove residents’ rights to the land, to the slow work of trust that turned photographs into a tool for medical and legal advocacy?

على مدار أكثر من عقد، وثّق محمد مهدي الحياة في وادي القمر، وهو حيّ في الإسكندرية، حيث يعيش أكثر من 70 ألف شخص على بُعد 15 مترًا فقط من مصنع أسمنت يملأ منازلهم بالغبار السام. لم يأتِ إلى المكان كمراقب من الخارج، بل لأنه يعيش بالقرب منه ويعاني هو نفسه من مرض الربو. بدأت رحلته مع هذه القصة عام 2016 عندما طلبت منه إحدى السيدات توثيق مرض شقيقتها التي كانت تحتضر.

في هذه المحاضرة، يتجاوز محمد مهدي الصور نفسها ليتناول الأسئلة التي شكّلت هذا المشروع: كيف يمكن تصوير معاناة مجتمع دون اختزاله في معاناته؟ وكيف يتحول الشخص المُصوَّر من مجرد “موضوع” أمام الكام

Organized by Banlastic, in partnership with Photopia and World Press Photo, and in collaboration with the Alexandria Green Film Festival (AGFF), we are delighted to invite you to a screening of “Gone”, held alongside the “Down to Earth” exhibition, hosted by Institut Français d’Égypte in Alexandria.

Winner of First Prize in the Echoes of the Mediterranean Competition at the Alexandria Green Film Festival, Gone tells a deeply personal story that raises broader questions about memory, loss, neglect, and the future of Alexandria in the face of climate change.

The screening will be followed by an open discussion with the film’s director, Salma Abo Amra, about the film and its connection to climate issues and the city.

يسعدنا ندعوكم لعرض فيلم “راحت - Gone”، على هامش معرض “العودة للجذور | Down to Earth” في مقر المعهد الفرنسي بالإسكندرية.

الفيلم، الفائز بالمركز الأول في مسابقة أصداء المتوسط ضمن مهرجان الإسكندرية للسينما الخضراء، بيحكي قصة شخصية جداً.. لكنها بتطرح سؤال أكبر عن الذاكرة، والفقد، والإهمال، ومستقبل مدينة الإسكندرية في مواجهة تغير المناخ.

بعد العرض هيكون في نقاش مفتوح مع مخرجة الفيلم/ سلمى أبو عمرة حول الفيلم وعلاقته بقضايا المناخ والمدينة.
