Why do we feel peace, love, and unity when listening to music, particularly dance music?
As humans we spend most of our time “thinking”. We aren’t really “present” - our consciousness lives in its own fabricated reality, separate from the true physical reality.
This separation, creates our sense of self, our identity, but also our suffering.
What is causing this “separation”? Perhaps a mixture of nature and nurture. Evolution-wise we evolved a hyperactive neocortex which creates complex hierarchical thinking which projects into the future, then we also have a society which perpetuates hierarchy through separation, creating a strengthened sense of self, and a deeper sense of isolation.
So what role does dance music have in all this?
Dance music dissolves the hierarchy created by the neocortex. It grants us access to our ancient brain, devoid of separation from the unitary movement of life - through its soothing bass tones and enchanting rhythms.
In that moment… there is no human, no thinking, no “you” - only connection, love and unity.
