Update on Charlie Brown 💛🫏

Charlie Brown remains at the hospital while vets continue trying to determine exactly what is causing his illness.

The frustrating part at the moment is that, although his blood tests clearly show that his body is fighting a significant infection or inflammatory process, the hospital has not yet been able to pinpoint the exact source of the problem.

Some of the more specialised blood tests have now been sent away to external laboratories, so for the moment the veterinary team are continuing to monitor him closely while awaiting further results.

His bloodwork showed raised white blood cells, particularly the types associated with infection and inflammation, alongside mild anaemia, confirming that Charlie is genuinely unwell rather than simply “off colour”. At the same time, there were also some encouraging aspects to the results, as they did not show signs of catastrophic organ failure and suggested that his immune system is still actively responding and fighting.

The fact that Charlie initially improved after strong antibiotics before deteriorating again has made the case more complicated and is one of the reasons the vets are continuing their investigations so carefully.

One thing that makes donkeys particularly challenging medically is that they often hide illness extremely well until they are quite poorly. A donkey standing quietly and looking subdued can actually be a very significant warning sign.

For now, Charlie remains under close observation at the hospital, where he is receiving supportive care while everybody waits for more answers.
