AREA TROUT 6.
Micro spoons for area fishing 1.

Micro spoons are very popular type of hard lures because even novice anglers can use the successfully on their very first trips, too. They have a “built-in” action that is why a newcomer can have good experience and on the other hand we do not need more items just a simple snap lock swivel and the tackle is ready to go. It will help us prevent line twist and easy lure change. Some area cups do not allow the use of plastic lures, so hard baits will step forward as a number one lure. Spoons can be distinguished by their shapes, their names derive from those forms.

SHAPES
Two main groups can be formed according to their frontal view. Applying this division we can speak about French-like and willow blades. French features a narrow and a wide profile on the ends, their width and length is about 1:2.5 while willow is like a willow leaf, both ends come into points, their ratio is about 1: 3-4.
If we have a look at their side views, we can form three main and lots of sub forms such as slightly cupped which features willows. Deep cupped version can be found on French blades and the last one is the S shaped.

Wide profiled spoons: their main value is the super slow presentation. Fish have more time to have a thorough look at the lure that is why we will less faul hooking. Slow presentation allows shallow water fishing as well and our lure will not get snagged or sit or hit the bottom. While retrieving the deep cup moves a lot of water around the lure’s path, making swirls behind.
In cold water condition we surely make good use of slow presentation because fish do not want to waste more energy on getting food just the minimum they require. They are less active this time, staying hugging the bottom hibernated and waiting for the prey to come to their mouth. Fish do not chase their prey this time.
Slow presentation is also a very good option if the fishing water is a little bit stained or discoloured when fish will not perceive the lure from the distance but feel the disturbance the spoon makes. Trout has a wide visual window, it mainly gets their food by sight, so we have to rely on this sense. Slow presentation can also be a drawback because trout have more time to inspect the lure and would find it suspicious and refuse it to take.
We have to note here that the deeper cupped and wider profiled lure will bend our rod tip more because of the resistance. It simply means two things, one is our rod will bow during retrieve and the other one is the lure will send us stronger vibration through the blank to our palm.
I would definitely recommend this form to novice anglers.

In the next chapter we will deal with willow spoons.

AREA TROUT 5.
Reels for area fishing

Area trout fishing is a finesse style fishing so we do not need large, heavy-duty reels for the job. We usually use rods under 70 grams. While we are holding the rod in hand all the time we need a light reel for our rod to balance it. It is very hard to determine what size reel is suitable for an area rod. We can say that a size 1000 or a 2000 will surely fit into the grip. The size does not always give us exact weight. If we have a look at a Shimano Stradic or a Daiwa Caldia in this size limit, we find the scales will show well under 200 grams. But on the other hand Ryobi full metal Zauber reels in this size will well over 200 grams, they weigh about 240 grams! All right, we could say 40-80 grams do not matter! But DO! Just attach your reel into the holder and balance your rod with the fitted reel. If it is balance, you will find that the balancing point is somewhere in front of the fore foot of the reel holder.

Smaller reels such as 500 and 800 are not really favoured by me because they are equipped with smaller diameter spools. This means that you cannot cast as long distances as you can with a size 1000 or bigger reel.

The other crucial point is the very sensitive drag system. We usually use front drag reels but of course it depends on your personal choice. If you like rear drag ones, use them. The most important feature in my opinion in a good trout reel to have a very sensitive drag which can be set finely. One click towards stronger setting should mean a little stronger drag, two clicks a little bit more and so on. If your drag can not be finely tuned and will stop while playing a fish, you will lose it! I usually use almost zero drag and I use my pointing finger of the rod hand to cushion the run of the fish. It is the finest drag available but be careful, practice first before entering into a competition.

I use these reels mainly:
Shimano Rarenium 1000 Ci4
Shimano Stradic 1000 CI4+
Daiwa Luvias 1003

AREA TROUT 4.
Rods for spoons and spinners

In the previous chapter we dealt with the rods designed mainly for jig fishing. In this part we will have a thorough look at the slower action rods. These mainly aim at chubs, trout or perch spinning. There are some area competitions where soft lures are not allowed to use in this case competitors have to grab their spooncasters. These softer spined rods can also be used for UL or nano jig fishing but they cannot give you the feel of a crisp jig rod while moving your lure on the deck. We are not able to give the same performance with our soft lures that a jig rod can.
They are comparatively soft that is why we cannot cast our micro jigs as accurately as with a fast actioned rod. These rods are equipped with tubular or hollow tip and can be bent into a full curve! Nowadays manufacturers make solid tip rods with this characteristic feature, too.
Fishing the spoons is quite a fast presentation compared to jig fishing. We should move our spoons or spinners to come alive really fast. The take on a spoon rod is heavy bending like you are pulling your tackle into a sunken water filled sac. This heavy loading requires cushioning by our rod.
The other reason choosing a slower rod for spoons because we feel the vibrations and turbulence in our palm produced by the hard lure. The power of vibrations should be reduced by the blank and grip as well in order to feel fishing and lure presentation comfortable.
Some recommended rods for hard lures:
Nano Long SE
Ebisu II Gold
Ebisu II Violet
Levin

We will deal with reels for area fishing next.
