From a gigantic mine to a natural-historical park, Las Médulas are a spectacular mix of natural monument and archaeological zone. They constitute in practice a theme park on the capacity of Roman mining. An industrial network that caves and orography testify to the gold exploitation to which it was subjected.
Both the extraordinary natural heritage and the legacy of Roman mining are elements to see in Las Médulas. For this reason, the ideal is to spend a whole day, at least, on the visit. The natural continuation of this getaway is the Templar population of Ponferrada. Another nearby alternative is Villafranca del Bierzo. Both serve as an external base to assault this beautiful enclave. Outside of El Bierzo the monumental León unfolds. If you want to continue in the middle of nature, the Parque de los Ancares in León is an ideal place.
