I often meet students who have trouble using SER and ESTAR. And a big part of the problem is that they aren't clear on which forms are SER and which are ESTAR in different tenses.

The conjugation of these verbs is irregular, and if we have to think about it when we're going to use them, we probably won't be able to decide correctly which one we want to use.

The same thing happens with past tenses. Often, the mistakes don't come from not knowing which tense to choose (perfect or imperfect), but from not knowing the conjugation for each tense.

It's worth memorizing verb conjugation very well until it becomes automatic.
