the ‘past continuous’ is used for actions and states that were unfinished at a certain time in the past or to stress the duration of something.

Yesterday, Tom and Betty played cards.
They began at 10am and finished at 1130am.
At 1030, Tom and Betty were playing cards.
‘They were playing’ means they were in the middle of playing and they had not finished playing yet.

Was / were + base verb + ing is the past continuous

Yesterday at 5pm I rode my bike home from work.
I arrived home at 6pm.
At 530pm I was riding my bike.

Try this one;
Last Sunday I went for a swim at 11am.
I finished swimming at 230pm.
