Singing Through Time

I’m happy to share the news about an upcoming concert this Friday evening - Spanish art song from the early 20th century for voice and piano.

I decided to let Instagram rest as I focused on what I do best and other priorities in life. I’m eager to share some of the results of this process and I can only say this is the beginning…

I’m very grateful for the alignment of all the people, places, stars and things that have allowed this to come to fruition.

Ending the week with voice technique! A theoretical standpoint to understand the production of vocal sound, called "vocal onset", which is an important element to develop in your vocal technique.

Also, vocal onset is an important characteristic of a singer's style and can be defining quality in a musical genre.

It may be important to consider what type of onset you are developing, in terms of vocal health, and what onset related stylistic decisions you make when you interpret a song.

eading on vocal technique can easily lead to confusion and be overwhelming. However, it's a challenge that I find important both as a singer and as a teacher. Cornelius L. Reid is a well-established author and reference in Voice Studies - mainly because of his book A
Dictionary of Vocal Terminology: An Analysis, published in 1983.

In The Free Voice, Reid explains with detail the fundamental concepts that create his standpoint within singing. It's a book for voice geeks, definitely, but it's a stance of knowledge that questions our own understanding of the voice and I applaud that! There's nothing like a good argument, with solid interest in dialogue and the purpose of learning more, that moves academic studies forward.

Challenging the "status quo" of certain concepts in voice studies, his knowledge is very clearly stated. For example, he
disagrees with the "control of function through control of breath" and with the "control of function by means of forward placement" ... why? Read the book, it's food for thought, at the very least.
