Περίληψη

Οι πυρκαγιές είναι ένα φαινόμενο με επίδραση σχεδόν σε κάθε οικοσύστημα της Γης. Επηρεάζουν και επηρεάζονται από τις παγκόσμιες κλιματικές αλλαγές που συντελούνται, αλλά παρόλο τον κεντρικό ρόλο τους, η κατανόηση των επιπτώσεών τους είναι ακόμη ανεπαρκής. Στην παρούσα ομιλία θα συζητηθούν οι μηχανισμοί μέσω των οποίων οι πυρκαγιές μπορούν να επηρεάσουν το παγκόσμιο περιβάλλον, με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση σε έρευνές μας πάνω στις αλληλεπιδράσεις μεταξύ πυρκαγιών-αέριας ρύπανσης-κλίματος. Επίσης, θα παρουσιαστεί ένα ευρύτερο πλαίσιο γύρω από το πώς οι πυρκαγιές μπορούν να προσεγγισθούν και να κατανοηθούν ως φαινόμενο που βρίσκεται σε συνεχή (αν και βίαιο) “διάλογο” με το περιβάλλον και τις ανθρώπινες κοινωνίες, καθώς και πώς αυτό μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε καλύτερες προσομοιώσεις και προβλέψεις των πυρκαγιών στο μέλλον.

Abstract

Wildfires are a central component of the Earth system. They both influence and are influenced by the ongoing global climate change, but despite their potentially crucial role, the understanding of their potential impacts is still poor. In this talk, the mechanisms through which wildfires can influence the global environment will be discussed, focusing particularly on our studies of fire-pollution-climate interactions. Additionally, a broader perspective will be presented on how wildfires can be approached and understood as a phenomenon that is in a constant (arguably violent) “dialogue” with the environment and with humans, and how this can lead to better wildfire predictions in the future.
