Last week we asked you what those mysterious balls on the top of the tower meant. It is actually a telegraph that was installed in the second half of the 19th century. The balls served as a communication device between the port and the city. Depending on their number and location on a cable they served to inform the arrival of commercial vessels and their origin or destination.

A botijo is not something to keep the ghosts away, but it is a cooling device. It is a clay container that is designed to contain water. Once the water is in, it cools the water because it starts acting like an evaporative cooler. When the water is cooled, the trick is to drink from the botijo without actually touching it with your mouth. You need to hold the handle in one hand, hold the lower part of the botijo in your other hand and at last you need to lift the botijo with the small water sprout facing you. This way, the water will start coming out and you have to fetch it with your mouth. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? 😄
