FAILURE OF RETAINING WALL
A retaining wall is built to hold back soil or earth on one side. Failure occurs whenthe wall cannot resist the lateral earth pressure exerted by the retained material.
Type Of Failure
1.Overturning Failure Wall rotates about its toe due to excessive earth pressure.
2.Siding Failure Wall slides forward when frictional resistance is inadequate.
3.Bearing Capacity Failure Foundation soil fails to support the wall load, causing settlement.
4.Structural Failure Cracks or collapse due to poor design or reinforcement.
Causes omaintenance
A)Poor drainage behind the wall
B) Inadequate design against slidinmaintenanc poor quality materials
C) Improper backfill compaction
D) Vibration or earthquake loads
Preventive Measures
• Provide weep holes or drainage pipes to relieve hydrostatic pressure
• Ensure proper foundation and soil bearing capacity
• Maintain adequate factors of safety
• Use reinforced or gravity retaining wall based on design
• Conduct regular inspection and maintenance
