Following our World Environment Day celebrations on 5 June, another theme across our sites focused on biodiversity and everyday actions 🌿
Activities varied between locations, all aiming to support local ecosystems and raise awareness. These included installing birdhouses, dedicating areas for wildflowers, and organising nature walks combined with learning about different tree species. At some sites, colleagues also planted summer flowers to brighten the environment.
In addition, employees created paper (origami) pots and planted sunflower seeds to take home - a simple way to continue the impact beyond the workplace.
A good reminder that sustainability is built not only through large initiatives, but also through small actions that engage people and create awareness over time.

Thank you to Finland’s Minister of the Environment, Sari Multala, for an insightful and constructive discussion on the future of biowaste recycling.
Walki had the opportunity to present the findings of a stakeholder study commissioned by , based on interviews with 13 experts representing different parts of Finland’s biowaste recycling value chain. The study revealed a remarkably consistent message: the next leap in biowaste recycling will not come from building more infrastructure, but from making the existing system work better in everyday life.
One of the most thought-provoking findings was the idea that the kitchen is the true user interface of the biowaste recycling system. When sorting organic waste is easy, clean and seamlessly integrated into daily routines, recycling rates increase. At the same time, the study highlighted the importance of collaboration across the entire value chain. Behaviour, products, services, waste collection, treatment technologies, regulation and communication all need to work together as one coherent system.
Our discussion also covered the implementation of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and how national policy choices can support both biowaste recycling and broader circular economy objectives.
It was particularly encouraging that the study’s proposal to bring together the entire biowaste value chain around one common table received a positive response. Pauliina Saari, Sustainability Director at Walki, believe that stronger collaboration between all actors in the ecosystem will be one of the key enablers of the next stage of development.
Many thanks again to Minister Sari Multala and her team for an excellent discussion.

Sustainability is still often seen as a separate part of business, even though it is increasingly essential to connect it to business decisions, product development and customer needs. Understanding how to make the value of sustainability visible and communicate its benefits is something we see as both challenging and critical.
This week, we kicked off a team journey to further develop how we create value for our customers, using the UN Global Compact “Sustainability x Business” programme as a framework for discussion. Together with more than 40 other companies, we are sharing perspectives and learning from each other on how to better connect sustainability with business and customer needs. The programme will continue throughout the year.
For us, this is not just a concept. It shows up in everyday questions, for example:
• how we support customers in responding to evolving regulatory requirements
• how we better understand and communicate the value created across the value chain
• how we make sustainability benefits more visible in practice and in communication
Sustainability is not something separate from business. It is increasingly becoming a core part of how we develop our solutions and build our business.
We look forward to continuing the dialogue with our customers and partners as we move forward together.
