Mirator 24(2): Preservation – renewal – change, edited by Sanna Supponen, has been published!

The articles of the issue discuss the topic from different perspectives. Jesús Rodríguez Viejo’s article “Image and Memory in Medieval Germany: Sigebert of Minden and his Sacramentary (1022-1036)” explores the decoration, perception, and function of the Sigebert Sacramentary (Berlin, Staatsbibliothek, MS. Theol. lat. fol. 2), one of the largest and most luxurious, yet overlooked manuscripts ever created in medieval Central Europe and manufactured at the Abbey of St Gallen in the 1020s. In their study titled “Revealing Medieval Books’ Dirty Little Secrets: Tracing Late-Medieval Use of a Breviary in Turku diocese”, Tuomas Heikkilä and Kirsi Vikman examine the liturgical books used in the Turku diocese in the late 15th century, arguing that a Breviary printed by Anton Koberger in 1485—not the 1488 Missale Aboense—marked the initial step towards liturgical harmonisation in the region through the use of printed books. The article “Skúli Þórðarson Thorlacius on Historical Nordic Wrestling: Translation and Commentary of a Passage in Borealium veterum matrimonia (1785)” by Antti Ijäs makes Thorlacius’s monograph on the marriage rites of the ancient Nordics accessible both in its Latin original and an English translation with a commentary focusing on his sources. The issue also includes an introduction that discuss the theme from the perspective of medieval studies, and Janika Aho's review on Jyrki Nissi’s book Kuolema keskiajalla – Hyvä kuolema mustan surman ajan Euroopassa (Gaudeamus 2023).

Between Science and Magic

A special issue of Mirator

This special issue stems from the Between Science and Magic Symposium, held 10-11 October 2024 at the University of Turku and jointly organized by the project TiTaRa: Between Science and Magic and the Finnish network of magic studies.

The special issue (Mirator 2/25) will explore the themes of the symposium and the TiTaRa project: the practices and worldviews of people operating between science and magic, as well as those engaging in practices of witchcraft and esotericism. The TiTaRa project explores questions of identity through English historical linguistics and book history, and the Between Science and Magic symposium’s papers dealt with a variety of materials and languages using methods ranging from folklore studies to archaeology.

Mirator (https://journal.fi/mirator) is a multilingual, peer reviewed open access journal published by Glossa, the Society for Medieval Studies in Finland. Mirator’s open access policy means that all texts published in the journal are freely available (to read, download, distribute, or link). The journal publishes texts in Finnish, Swedish, and English.

Submissions
We welcome submissions on all topics related to Western esotericism, magic, witchcraft, and early sciences bordering them such as astrology and alchemy. Submissions on the intersections of magic and science are especially welcome. The special issue will focus on the medieval period, but submissions related to the early modern period will be considered as well. While the special issue is related to the Between Science and Magic Symposium, we welcome article proposals by non-participants as well.

Please send a 250-word abstract and a brief biographical statement by 30 November 2024 to [email protected]. Submitted manuscripts must comply with the journal’s author guidelines (https://journal.fi/mirator/about/submissions) and will be subject to a double-blind peer review.

Call for contributions: Mirator theme issue (2/2024): Preservation - Renewal - Change

The Middle Ages was a time of constant change in society, spiritual life, and art. On the other hand, many phenomena were based on the preservation and renewal of ancient culture. Some of them continued and took on new forms in the early modern era. In recent years, medieval studies have seen a number of changes in research methods and perspectives. For example, the recycling of objects and texts for new uses has given them new interpretations while simultaneously preserving them for researchers.

Mirator is calling for articles for a thematic issue on the theme Preservation - Renewal - Change, to be published in December 2024. Articles can be from any field of research and cover any geographical area. The thematic issue is related to the 2024 Dies Medievales conference, but articles can also be proposed by non-participants. The publication languages are English, Finnish, and Swedish.

Mirator is a non-profit, peer-reviewed scientific Open Access journal published by Glossa - Society for Medieval Studies. Open Access means that all texts published in Mirator are available (readable, downloadable, distributable, linkable) without any special fee or permission.

There is no charge for publishing or offering your article for publication. Unfortunately, no royalties are paid for published articles, and we are unable to pay for language checks.

Article manuscripts should be submitted to Mirator no later than 1 August 2024: https://journal.fi/mirator/about/submissions. There you will also find instructions for the author. To be published in the issue, articles must receive a peer-review opinion of "accepted as is" or "accepted with minor corrections".

Kirjoituskutsu: Miratorin teemanumero (2/2024): säilyttäminen - uudistaminen - muutos

Keskiaika oli jatkuvaa murroksen aikaa niin yhteiskunnassa, hengellisessä elämässä kuin taiteessa. Toisaalta monet ilmiöt perustuivat antiikin kulttuurin säilyttämiseen ja uudistamiseen ja ne jatkuivat ja saivat uusia muotoja tultaessa uuden ajan alkuun. Viime vuosina keskiajan tutkimuksessa on myös koettu runsaasti muutoksia tutkimusmenetelmien ja näkökulmien saralla. Esimerkiksi esineiden ja tekstien kierrätys uusiin käyttötarkoituksiin on tuonut niille uusia tulkintoja, m***a samalla myös säilyttänyt niitä tutkijoiden käyttöön.

Mirator pyytää artikkeleita teemanumeroon aiheella säilyttäminen - uudistaminen - muutos, joka julkaistaan joulukuussa 2024. Artikkelit voivat olla miltä tahansa tutkimusalalta ja käsitellä mitä tahansa maantieteellistä aluetta. Teemanumero liittyy vuoden 2024 Dies medievales -konferenssiin, m***a artikkeleita voi ehdottaa myös muut kuin osallistujat. Julkaisukieliä ovat suomi, ruotsi ja englanti.

Mirator on Glossa - keskiajantutkimuksen seura ry:n julkaisema, voittoa tavoittelematon tieteellinen vertaisarvioitu Open Access -julkaisu. Open Access tarkoittaa, että kaikki Miratorissa julkaistut tekstit ovat saatavissa (luettavissa, ladattavissa, levitettävissä, linkitettävissä) ilman erityistä maksua tai lupaa.

Kirjoituksen julkaisemisesta tai julkaisuun tarjoamisesta ei peritä maksua. Julkaistuista kirjoituksista ei valitettavasti makseta kirjoituspalkkioita, emmekä pysty maksamaan kielentarkastuksia.

Inbjudan att bidra till Mirators temanummer (2/2024): Att bevara – förnya – förändra

Medeltiden var en tid av ständiga förändringar i samhället, det andliga livet och konsten. Likväl byggde många företeelser på att bevara och förnya den gamla kulturen. Vissa av dem fortsatte och antog nya former under den tidigmoderna eran. Under de senaste åren har fältet för medeltidsstudier sett ett antal förändringar i forskningsmetoder och perspektiv. Till exempel har eftermedeltida återbruk av föremål och texter för nya användningsområden gett dem nya funktioner, vilket i sin tur innebär att dessa har bevarats och finns tillgängliga för forskare.

Mirator efterlyser artiklar till ett temanummer på temat Att bevara – förnya – förändra som kommer att publiceras i december 2024. Artiklarna kan komma från vilket forskningsområde som helst och täcka vilket geografiskt område som helst. Temanumret är relaterat till konferensen Dies Medievales 2024, men artiklar kan föreslås även om man inte har deltagit i konferensen. Publikationens språk är svenska, finska och engelska.

Mirator är en vetenskaplig Open Access -tidskrift som publiceras av Glossa – Sällskapet för medeltidsforskning i Finland. Open Access innebär att alla texter som publiceras i Mirator är tillgängliga (läsbara, nedladdningsbara, fria att distribuera och länkbara) utan någon särskild avgift eller tillstånd.

Det är gratis att publicera eller erbjuda sin artikel för publicering till Mirator. Tyvärr kan inga arvoden utbetalas för publicerade skrifter och vi har inte möjlighet att betala för språkgranskning.

The latest issue of Mirator, titled "Medievalism in the Twenty-first Century" and edited by Reima Välimäki has been published! Our thanks to all writers and referees!

The Middle Ages are present in the various forms of twenty-first-century culture, from movies to novels and sports events. The Mirator issue of 2021 presents a thematic section on current medievalism.

Medievalism is not only based on the Middle Ages but often carries the tradition of national interpretations of history. Both Norwegian and Finnish contemporary medievalism, presented in the issue, draws from the nineteenth and early twentieth-century romantic nationalism. In Norway, a skiing event and a major movie production have commemorated the early thirteenth-century civil war. In contemporary Finnish fiction, the Kalevala-metric poetry represents authenticity, paganism and liberal sexuality. The thematic section on medievalism is complemented by a historiographical article (in Finnish) about Jarl Gallén, a Catholic Swedish-speaking Finn, representing an alternative to Finnish nationalistic history in twentieth-century Finland.
