Why Early Childhood Development (ECD) Is Important for Children in Fiji

Fiji wants all children to grow well, learn well, and be safe. This matches our national plans and the rules we follow to protect children.

1. UN CRC – Children’s Rights

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child says every child must get good health care, learning, and protection.
Fiji follows this and includes it in our National Development Plan and the ECD Framework 2024–2028.

2. SDG Target 4.2 – World Agreement

The world agrees that young children must learn early and be ready for school.
SDG 4.2 says all boys and girls should join school ready to learn.

3. What ECD Means

Early Childhood Development looks at all parts of a child:
• Body – health and growing strong
• Thinking – learning, problem-solving
• Feelings – confidence, staying calm
• Social skills – playing, talking, making friends

4. Early Years Are Very Important

A child’s brain grows very fast from birth to age five.
These early years affect:
• Health
• School success
• Future jobs
• How children feel and behave as adults

5. Good ECD Helps Children for Life

When children get the right support early, they:
• Stay healthier
• Learn better
• Behave better
• Do better in life and work

6. ECD Needs Many Services Working Together

Children grow well when everyone works together.
ECD includes:
• Health
• Nutrition (good food)
• Early learning
• Safety and protection
• Family support

In Simple Words

Helping young children early helps Fiji’s future.
When children grow strong, learn well, and feel safe, our families and communities become stronger too.
