I started learning French almost four years ago because I fell in love with a Frenchman. He lived in France and I in the US. He spoke perfect English but I knew if I wanted to be a part of his world (with his family and friends) I would need to learn the language.
I was hesitant to take a course online because I didn’t think it would be as intense as a private tutor in person (which I tried twice).
However, because I was spending time in both France and the US, I gave it a shot so that I could take lessons regardless of where I was.
I found Fast Track French and Françoise online and after one lesson I knew this was going to be great!
In a very short time my boyfriend (now husband) could see (and hear) major progress. Soon he was able to speak at a normal speed and I could understand!
Because I live and work in the US, I am not immersed in the language so it has taken a little while to get up to speed and I still have a long way to go.

It does get better and better.
You just have to stick with it and practice speaking every time you get a chance. If I were to give five pieces of advice I would say:

1. Start by knowing it will take a long time to become fluent (unless you have moved to a French speaking country and are 100% immersed).
Be patient and think of learning a new language as an investment, not a quick, one-time purchase. It grows over time.
2. Don’t get too upset when people look at you like you have three heads when you try to speak French. It doesn’t necessarily mean you said everything wrong. It may be your accent that throws people off, or maybe your grammar isn’t quite right.
Don’t lose your confidence and keep trying.

3. Know that you will be aggravated many times in social settings. The conversation will get too fast to follow. You will want to participate in the conversation but by the time you have formed your sentence in your head, the conversation will have already moved on. You will feel useless sitting there.
