John Darwin stayed hidden in Hartlepool, sometimes emerging disguised, while Anne collected £679,073.18 in fraudulent insurance payouts. The couple planned a new life in Panama, buying property and posing for a photo with a real estate agent. When John reappeared in London, pretending to have memory loss, a suspicious acquaintance’s Google search uncovered the Panama photo, proving he was alive. This digital clue exposed the Darwins’ elaborate fraud, unraveling their years-long deception.
In July 2008, John and Anne Darwin faced trial in Teesside Crown Court. Both were convicted of fraud; John received 6 years and 3 months, Anne 6 years and 6 months. Most of the £679,073.18 was recovered. Released in 2011, their marriage ended.
