KANGA : The Textile Heritage of Zanzibar

[EN] Kanga is a colorful cotton fabric that is particularly prominent in the Zanzibar archipelago. This fabric, originating from the Swahili coast (Kenya and Tanzania), has become very popular since the 19th century. Draped around the waist like wax prints in West Africa, or used as a bath or beach towel, it is a true everyday item.

Kanga is distinguished by its unique visual structure: the Pindo (the border), the Mji (the central motif), and the Ina (or Ujumbe), which is a Swahili inscription, often a proverb, a riddle, or a message. 

The Africa Fashion exhibition at the Musée du Quai Branly highlights how African textiles are truly living archives just like the commemorative fabrics or royal textiles presented in the museum.  

Born from trade in the Indian Ocean, Kanga proves that African fashion has always been global and connected to the world.
