The Geological Society of France (La Société géologique de France, SGF), located in the heart of Paris, is one of the world's oldest societies. It was founded in 1830 by geologist Ami Boué, who published the first geological map of the world, and mineralogist Alexandre Brongniart. Since the early 19th century—a period that saw the rise of many new scientific fields, especially the natural sciences.
Its library, one of the richest in the world, holds over 100,000 maps and works.
Geology underpins most developed societies’ activities, which depend on energy sources, raw materials and water, and require a better understanding of the planet to anticipate new opportunities and natural or human-caused risks.
The mission of the SGF is to highlight the achievements of all French geologists—teachers, researchers, or industrialists—and to place current geological science in historical context.
