SOL Discos
SOL DISCOS is a Favorite Recordings sub-label launched by Pascal Rioux & DJ Waxist, focusing on reissuing quality soulful music from the 70's & early 80's.
Out on Message In Our Music Volume 2, selected by Waxist who has a few words about it:
"The Spice Of Ice was a band based in California in the ending 70’s / early 80’s. According to the information we managed to collect, it was a spin off group from another band called “The Stone Gumbo Band” from Pacoima, California.
The band was formed by students of the Valley College’s Music Department, including Gwendolyn Forsythe (Vocals), Rickey Wilson (Guitar / Vocals), Derrick Nelson (Percussions), James Wilson (Keyboards / Vocals), Kevin Robinson (Drums / Bass), Carolyn Moore (Vocals).
“Star Struck” is taken from their 1982 four tracks EP which was released on their own imprint Iceland Records. The record also features a beautiful downtempo balled (“I Need Your Lovin”) as opening track, along with two other great dancers called “Well, Get Up Hollywood” and “I Just Want To Give You Love”. The four songs were recorded in Fidelity Studios, CA in less than a week.
The recording got some local exposure & success, bringing the band to collaborate with some producers in Las Vegas & perform at the famous Moulin Rouge Hotel or at the Sahara Hotel in Vegas."

Out on Message on Our Music Volume 2 out on January 20th! A few words by Waxist who selected its genuine tracklist:
"The song “Magic Of Love”, sung by Janice Nicki Harrison, is taken from a musical called The Shepherd. The song was composed & written by Theodore Wortham & his cousin Tim Wortham. Theodore’s talent for music brought him to Philadelphia International Records, founded by Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff, where he became a writer, composer and producer for the company. He has been writing and producing for famous soul music artists such as Teddy Pendergrass, the Stylistics, Billy Paul or Jean Carn to name a few. “The Shepherd” was a musical which first got played in Philadelphia in April 1980. It met some success and eventually got played Off in Broadway Theater in New York City in 1983. Singer & actress Janice Harrison had a leading roll in the play, and sung several songs for it.
“Magic Of Love” was working pretty well with the audience and received great response. Thus, Theodore decided to record & press this song & two others in 1981, and released it in tiny quantities to promote the musical “The Shepherd”. Other singers featured on the recording along with Janice are Ronald Richardson, Tim Wortham, Ted Wortham and Cynthia Biggs."
