I m back from my trip to Kyiv, where I played for .kyiv on Saturday; one of my favorite gig experiences so far. I was pretty sure I’d head there, and this time, after a 25-hour train trip, border controls, and military everywhere, it was absolutely worth it.
Music can help people forget the war for a while, giving a break when things are hard. Techno is built for difficult situations, and I saw that in Kyiv. For many years, folks there have been living with constant attacks, war and uncertainty, yet they’re the same as anywhere & want human connection, fun, and those moments that make life good.
One night before my gig, a big Russian air strike happened , launching hundreds of drones along with over two dozen missiles across Ukraine, including Kyiv. Sirens wailed, and I went into the hotel’s bomb shelter & I was fine & everything was very routinized, like it’s just part of the day. The Ukrainian air defenses downed a lot , but there were still hits, casualties, and damage in places. This is the daily reality they’ve been dealing with under pressure, and we don’t see everything in the news & only the bigger or more newsworthy ones make headlines.
What impressed me was the positive mood from everyone in Kyiv; they’re committed to keeping going, finding joy where possible. The crowd at Mexanika. was full of energy and immersive. It turned the evening into something liberating.
Big thanks for the warm welcome and that energy you bring. Shoutout to the crew who pulled it off seamlessly. Special props to .dj for the top-notch artist care, city tour, and handling logistics even with all the navigation hiccups. Great to catch up with and thanks for the railway tour. And of course, massive appreciation to the entire team behind the event for making it all happen.
Hopefully we will see each other soon, maybe in Kyiv again, or somewhere around the world once the war’s over and we can all travel freely. Stay strong! See you soon 💛💙
