A sad day today as we took down our exhibition of paintings. Very grateful to Simon for entrusting us with these works, and for coming over to Belfast to see the show. It was a privilege to have the works in the house, and a great joy to meet Simon & Ruth in person. Thanks to everyone for visiting!

'Water & Mud' by Simon Carter
07.05.26 — 21.05.26

We are delighted to present this body of paintings and drawings by Simon Carter. Spanning more than a decade, the works bear witness to his sustained and intimate engagement with the diminishing salt marshes of the North Essex coastline. The threshold where land meets water will resonate with Irish landscape enthusiasts, yet Carter approaches this terrain with a finely judged balance of abstraction and figuration. Familiar forms emerge through painterly motifs, revealing not only the gradual construction of the landscape but also the visible, considered processes through which the works themselves come into being.

Simon Carter is a co-founder of the Contemporary British Painting platform, and is represented by Messum's Gallery in London. We encountered Simon’s work recently at the F. E. McWilliam Gallery, where two of his paintings formed part of a wonderful exhibition drawn from the private collection of Lord and Lady Belmore. The forthcoming exhibition at La Roche House, Belfast offers a unique opportunity to see a substantial body of Simon's work in person, without the requirement for a ferry or a flight!

Opening: Late Night Art, Thursday 7 May, 6-9pm
Discussion with the artist: Friday 8 May, 7:30pm
Continues: Friday 8 May to Sunday 10 May, 11am-5pm
Private viewing possible by appointment until 21st May
