One of our biggest responsibilities as insurance agents is listening to insureds who are concerned about the rising rates, and trying to help them come up with solutions. We are shocked at how few insureds take advantage of telematics. Telematics has been the insurance industry's answer to Insured A having to pay rates for Insured B's bad driving habits just because they are similar zip codes, vehicles, etc. So, the solution is to allow the carrier to use "usage-based telematics" to see how YOUR particular household drives (speed, acceleration, braking, time of day, etc). We have yet to see one of our insureds use telematics for 3 or 6 months (depending on the carrier) and their rates not go down. Most carriers give you an immediate 5-10% discount just for signing on, and then an additional discount, typically, after the evaluation period.

BEWARE! If your household's driving habits are bad, then be sure you can't be negatively impacted by usage-based telematics. ASK YOUR AGENT!

At The Insurance Advisor, most of our carriers don't allow you to be negatively impacted, presumably because the data collected is more valuable than a couple of percent the other way on rates. Think of it as a "thank you" for participating.
