Cookstown High School Pays Tribute to Mrs Sandra Evans

The Board of Governors, staff, pupils and wider Cookstown High School community were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs Margaret Alexandra (Sandra) Evans (née Hamilton).

Sandra dedicated her entire teaching career of 33 years to Cookstown High School, having joined the school in September 1973 after graduating in Geography from the University of Ulster, Coleraine, and completing her Diploma in Education at Queen’s University Belfast. Throughout her distinguished career, she inspired generations of young people through her passion for Geography, her professionalism and her unwavering commitment to the highest standards of teaching and learning.

Sandra was respected by pupils and colleagues alike for her fair, consistent and caring approach. As a Year 8 Form Tutor, she placed pastoral care at the heart of her work, creating a nurturing and supportive environment in which young people could thrive.

Her contribution to school life extended far beyond the classroom. Sandra managed the school bank for eleven years, served as teacher in charge of internal school finances for twenty-five years, supported the school youth club, Duke of Edinburgh Award and hockey activities, and represented the school at numerous charity events. She also accompanied pupils on educational visits across Europe, helping to broaden their horizons and create lasting memories.

Those who worked alongside Sandra remember her sense of humour, humility, kindness and dedication. She was a valued colleague, trusted friend and outstanding teacher whose influence continues to be reflected in the lives of countless former pupils.

As we celebrate Sandra’s life, we give thanks for her faithful service, her commitment to young people and the lasting contribution she made to Cookstown High School. Her legacy lives on through the generations of pupils she taught and the colleagues whose lives she enriched.

We extend our sincere condolences to William, Graeme, Stephen, Gareth and the wider Evans and Hamilton families at this difficult time.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
Matthew 25:23

Mrs Sandra Evans will be remembered with great affection, gratitude and respect by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
