BIG NEWS!!
Well... what a journey these last 6 years have been! We started running the station 7 days a week during lockdown, expanding what was initially a 2hr show once a week prior to the pandemic, into a full week schedule broadcasting between 6-12hrs each day and helping to foster a community of DJs and creatives that found themselves cut off from the creative world, friendships and collaboration.
There wasn't anything else similar running at the time so building a network of likeminded creatives seemed like the right thing to do. The Method Lounge studio quickly became a hub for the NE underground, bringing together a wide range of talent crossing an even wider range of genres and sounds, mixing old skool heads with the new skool generation and building a solid community within the region and beyond.
Established and respected names got involved but there was no pecking order and soon newbies and up n comers found themselves sharing line ups and even live shows with living legends and the guest mixes were flooding in from across the globe.
By 2022 we had launched the website and opened up Method Towers in the heart of the city and quickly expanded our daytime programme to include community and education focused programming, featuring shows, sets and podcasts created by a range of marginalised communities working in partnership with amazing organisations like Inspired Support and various councils, youth services and schools.
This space also allowed us create a new open access legal art space slap back in the city centre with support from NE1 and the Alison Foundation, which is now adorned with stunning artwork from local artists and crews plus leading names from across the UK art scene and beyond. The culmination of this part of the Method project resulting in the epic OXYGEN show we ran in May featuring over 70 visual artists plus about 30 other creatives, performance artists, musicians and more.
As many of you will know, we also programme and host a range of events, gigs and festivals including Lindisfarne Festival which last year won the Best Small Festival UK award. The backbone of many of stages has been the Method DJs who have played across not only the holy trinity of the Temple, Altar and Crypt but also most of the other stages in various guises. It's a credit to them and the vibes they bring that we have had the success with Lindi that we've had and I'm very proud of everyone that's been involved.
Last year we split the radio station up into smaller satellite studios so that the communities they served had better access and also to help my own personal sanity as I found myself almost living at Method Towers due to the amount of stuff we had running.
The landscape had already started to shift and this year we felt it was right to reflect and respond to that.
Newcastle is a different city. It's not perfect but the amount of collaboration and community that exists right now is amazing.
There is a real wave of creativity sweeping across the scene and we have some of the best, most ground breaking and exciting new bands, DJs, rappers and artists in the world that call the North East home.
There's also a lot more going on now.
Art collectives, radio stations, small independent venue spaces, festivals, creative businesses and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
These guys are all doing amazing and valuable work and we want to applaud and salute each and every one of you!!
So anyway... the future!
We feel it's time for Method to evolve.
There's gonna be a pause to most of the radio broadcasts over August as we prepare to come out of chrysalis in September.
We pride ourselves on innovation not replication so it's time for a new approach.
