THE 6 EYES OF A DRIVER

Many people think driving is simply about watching the road ahead.

In reality, that is only a small part of what keeps you safe.

Good drivers are constantly gathering information from all around them. They are not just looking. They are observing, predicting and planning.

I often describe it as using six different โ€œeyes.โ€

๐Ÿ”น The Road Eye
Watching signs, road markings, lane discipline and how the road ahead is developing.

๐Ÿ”น The Mirror Eyes
Checking what is happening behind, who is approaching and how quickly situations are changing around you.

๐Ÿ”น The Pedestrian Eye
Looking for people near crossings, bus stops, parked vehicles and anywhere someone may suddenly step into the road.

๐Ÿ”น The Vehicle Eyes
Spotting hidden vehicles, blind spots, motorcycles, cyclists and large vehicles that need more room than you might think.

๐Ÿ”น The Speed Eye
Monitoring your own speed, the speed of others and adjusting early to changing conditions.

๐Ÿ”น The Hazard Eye
Looking for bends, weather conditions, road surfaces and all the unexpected things that can appear without warning.

Many drivers focus on what is directly in front of them.

Safer drivers are constantly scanning all six areas.

That is often the difference between reacting to a problem and spotting it before it becomes one.

Driving is not about having better eyesight.

It is about knowing where your attention needs to be.

Which of these six โ€œeyesโ€ do you think drivers neglect the most?
