Recently, OpenAI researcher Ilya Sutskever tweeted "it may be that today's large neural networks are slightly conscious." (https://twitter.com/ilyasut/status/1491554478243258368). This sparked debate within the AI community, and reignited the long-standing question of whether machines could ever be conscious.
The Effective Altruism Edinburgh group are holding a discussion group on this question. The answer could have great moral consequence: it may determine whether AI systems are worthy of moral consideration, affecting how we treat AI in the future.
