Successful STEM careers depend on young people succeeding in high school physics and maths. Yet many students, right from the start of their journey through high school, struggle to learn to calculate with formulas. I often wonder how many teaching colleagues assume that students already know basic equation skills such as how to rearrange, substitute, use correct units and calculate correctly. But often students are not confident in these fundamentals and those who have not mastered equation skills can quickly lose confidence and fall behind in physics and maths.
