Be a REBEL Read BANNED BOOKS.

Challeng accepted.

The photo in the center is at one of my favorite libraries in the whole world Stoney Island Arts Bank The towering Johnson Publishing Archive contains books and periodicals acquired from the company that published seminal African American magazines Jet and Ebony. Many I’m sure would be banned in many public schools across America.

It amazes me the fights that take place so passionately in the public school systems. Books that I grew up reading The Diary of Ann Frank, The Color Purple. Authors like Stephen King and Maya Angelou are now being banned from public school libraries.

My mama is a retired library science teacher 👩🏾‍🏫 she was simply the best. She taught at an inner city school and in today’s world she would be fired for the books she selected to fill her school library with. My mama would purchase books from the allotted school budget. Then she would purchase the same books with her own pay to stock our at home library.

She believed that books were the keys to the KINGDOM.

They most certainly are and so as parents and fanatics try to silence the imagination, curiosity and wonder our children have. It is up to us to introduce the wonderful world of reading to our kids and the future generations.

Now before you go off on me. I’m talking about what is age appropriate for sure. Banning books is the equivalent of burning them it is such a bad time in history when parents want to censor books they obviously read while growing up.

So be a rebel and read a book.

Read one that will challenge you.

Read one with your child that will prompt the uncomfortable conversations.

Read one that will expand your mind.

Read one that will take you and your child on an adventure.

Reading encourages the mind to grow and thought provoking conversations to take place.
