Yes She Bakes
Cakes that taste as good as they look.
Beginner bakers, don’t waste your money on these five things
1. Supermarket bought food colouring- it’s watery & the colours are weak. You have to use so much to achieve your colour that it can cause your buttercream and batter to split.
2. Cheap vanilla essence- it tastes strange and chemically and is not the same thing as vanilla extract! Buy the real stuff it’s worth the extra pennies.
3. Cheap cake tins - they warp, they conduct heat unevenly & you’ll end up with some bits of cake dry and other parts under baked. I would rather have 1 good tin than 2 or 3 cheap tins! This REALLY makes a difference.
4. Cake release spray - I just don’t like it. It’s expensive and you should learn the skill of lining your tins. It takes two minutes and it works every time.
5. Cheap piping bags - I have tried them all and some have literally reduced me to tears! They split mid-pipe & cause havoc! The money you save on the purchase is lost because you have to use so many extra bags to stop splits and spillages.
Spend a little more and thank me later.
Save this for later and tell me something you’ve bought that you wish you didn’t?
If your buttercream is splitting in this heat? You’re not doing anything wrong…. I’ve got a couple of quick and really simple fixes.
Save this post for the next UK heatwave. I’d also loved to hear from bakers in hotter climates… how do you keep your buttercream from splitting? Let me know or drop any questions in the comments!
