A tradition more than 900 years old came to life once again in the heart of Exeter today.
The city's historic Lammas Fair returned with its colourful civic procession through the city centre, culminating in the reading of the ancient Proclamation and the ceremonial hoisting of the famous White Glove above the Exeter Historic Guildhall.
The White Glove has long been a symbol of the Lammas Fair and of the Royal protection once granted to the city's medieval fair. While many towns have lost these historic ceremonies over the centuries, Exeter proudly continues this unique tradition, connecting today's city with generations of Exonians stretching back before the Norman Conquest.
This year's celebrations were made even more special as the Lord Mayor of Exeter presented the Exeter Morris Dancers with the City Lapel Badge in recognition of their 75th anniversary. Their music, dancing and colourful display brought an extra sense of occasion to this remarkable event.
Following the ceremony, the Lord Mayor officially opened the Exeter Craft Festival on Exeter Cathedral Green, continuing a day that celebrates both Exeter's rich heritage and its vibrant creative community.
