Wildlife Spotlight: Periwinkle 🐚
🐚 Found clinging to rocks, mudflats and shorelines around our coasts, periwinkles are hardy little marine snails that play an important role in healthy coastal ecosystems. 🐚
🔎 Did you know?
Periwinkles can seal themselves safely inside their shell using a round "trap door" called an operculum, helping them stay protected and prevent drying out when the tide goes out!
🐚 Appearance:
• Common Periwinkles have rounded, whorled shells, usually greyish-brown in colour
• Flat Periwinkles have rounded, whorled shells and are often bright yellow
• Protected by a round operculum which closes the shell opening
🍽 Diet:
• Tiny plants and decaying organic matter
⏳ Average lifespan:
• Around 5–10 years
🌍 Habitat:
• Coastal, Marine and Intertidal
• Mudflats
• Rockpools
• Shoreline
📍 Location:
• Found on rocky shores around coasts and estuaries
✔️ Responsible wildlife observation helps protect this species:
• Make sure to put any periwinkles back where you found them
• Avoid disturbing birds that are feeding on periwinkles
• Respect sensitive coastal habitats
Let's protect our shorelines and the remarkable wildlife that calls them home, so these fascinating coastal species can thrive for generations to come. 💙

🌿 EA Research Spotlight: Seagrass Monitoring in the Exe Estuary 🌊
Did you know?
📍 Seagrass beds in the Exe Estuary are a rare and threatened habitat that support wildlife and provide important food sources for wildfowl.
🔬 EA surveys help:
• Identify seagrass species 🌱
• Map the extent of seagrass beds 🗺️
• Measure seagrass coverage across the estuary 📊
• Support ecological assessments under the Water Framework Directive ✅
🌊 Much of the seagrass grows across deep, soft mud. Using a hovercraft allows survey teams to access these areas safely and efficiently.
📅 Surveys take place between June and mid-July, helping capture peak seagrass growth while minimising disturbance to birds.
💚 Monitoring these valuable habitats helps us better understand and protect the health of the Exe Estuary for future generations.

South West Marine Fest 2026
🐟Reflecting on a brilliant few days at the South West Marine Fest in Brixham last month.🐟
🌊We attended as Exe Estuary Officers representing the Exe Estuary Management Partnership (EEMP). 🌊
📍Joining individuals and organisations from across the region to share learning and insights into the marine life of the South West. 📍
💬It was great to see our Exe Estuary Officer, Chloe Nunn, present in her role as Marine, Estuaries & Coastal Officer for Devon County Council. 💬
📢Chloe shared insights on coastal partnerships and the new governance framework in action, highlighting the value of collaborative approaches to estuary management.📢
🐬We were also inspired by insightful talks from organisations including the Ocean Conservation Trust, Devon Wildlife Trust and Sussex Dolphin Project, to name a few🐬
Looking back, it’s energising to see the level of passion, innovation and collaboration driving marine conservation forward 💙
