🚨PLEASE READ 🚨
With the current heat wave we are gently reminding owners NOT to walk their dogs OR leave them in a car for ANY amount of time and to know the signs of heatstroke as well as some tips on how to keep your pets cool.
If you think your pet is showing signs of heatstroke please call us IMMEDIATELY or Vets Now out of hours.
🍦 Keep refreshing your pets water bowl throughout the day with cold water, ice cubes can also be added.
🍦 Ice cube trays or kongs can be filled and frozen as a treat to keep your dog/cat cool and busy.
🍦 Fruit and veggies high in water content are a good way to keep your small furries hydrated (rommaine lettuce, cucumber, celery, courgette, apples, water/cantoloupe melon without the skin & seeds)
🍦 Brush your pet regularly to help keep their coat thin and free from excess hair & matts. This is especially important for long haired breeds!
🍦 Avoid putting your small furry in their exercise run during the day, when they are in their run make sure it is constantly in shade.
🍦 Small furry hutches should NEVER be in direct sunlight & small furries should not be in conservatories, greenhouses or any other glass building/shed. If you cannot move them indoors to a cool space, you can cover their run with towel, or place in shade cover to keep the sun off them. When providing shade ensure there is enough ventilation in the cage or run to allow a breeze to flow through. Tunnels are also great for this instead of using houses and igloos.
🍦 Make sure your small furries water bottle is regularly changed with cold water, cooling water bottle covers can also be purchased & ice cubes can be added to water bowls.
🍦Always make sure there is a shaded area for your pet to stay out of direct sunlight when outdoors. There are raised pet beds with canopy’s that can be bought. Or use parasols/umbrellas.
🍦 Apply pet-safe suncream to your pets nose, tips of ears and to areas where there is little or no fur to prevent sunburn. This is especially important for pets with white fur.
🍦 Get some cooling accessories for your pet such as – cooling mats, cooling vests/bandanas or a paddling pool. Dogs lose heat through their pads and by panting so a paddling pool is a really effective way to let them cool down.
🍦 Always ensure there are cool areas at home for your pet to relax where there is a fan/air con unit to help circulate cool air.
🍦 Keep your cat indoors.
🍦 Place a cold wet towel over your small furries cage or run and have a fan blowing on it. This will block out sunlight, and the direct breeze from the fan while still allowing cool air to flow through their hutch.

Meet Mel 🐾
I always knew I wanted a career with animals. From a young age I helped out on my godfather’s farm in Cumbria and have always been surrounded by lots of pets.
I started nursing in 2004 and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2009. I started working here in 2012 when the practice first opened and have enjoyed every moment.
I have a soft spot for black cats and currently have one of my own, Pumpkin 🧡
