Mr Allen Hampshire: a tribute

As a Club we were due to begin revealing our top 10 bowlers in reverse order, but yesterday’s events have changed those plans.

It is with great sadness that SBCI Cricket Club announces the passing of Allen Hampshire, affectionately known to generations as “Hampy”, following a long illness.

Allen joined SBCI as a teenager in 1953 and was playing for the 1st XI when the club moved to the Halifax League in 1959. He continued to represent the club for more than four decades, bowling his final spell in 2005. Away from the boundary, he served as the club’s treasurer for an incredible 58 years, finally handing over his briefcase in 2024.

His statistics tell the story of an outstanding cricketer: 7,700 overs bowled and 1,368 wickets taken. Yet one of Allen’s favourite memories came with the bat, driving the winning runs over the slips for 4 to secure the Parish Cup in 1964.

More importantly, Allen was far more than the numbers. Across eight decades at SBCI he became a friend, teammate, mentor and inspiration to so many. Whether welcoming new players, sharing stories in the clubhouse or chasing the annual subscriptions with just the right amount of menace, he was woven into the fabric of our club.

There could only ever be one choice for our No. 1 bowler.

Thank you, Hampy, for everything you gave to SBCI Cricket Club. Your legacy will live on through the generations you inspired.

Rest in peace, Allen.

We’ve spent the last year digging into our club’s history — celebrating the players, the moments and the achievements that have shaped us. That work is now proudly on display in the clubhouse with our brand‑new Honours Boards.

We’ve also put together a full batting and bowling archive, featuring the stats of more than 500 players who have represented the club in the Halifax League since 1959.

Over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing our Top 10 wicket‑takers and Top 10 run‑scorers from the last 67 seasons right here on our social channels.

To bring everyone together, we’re hosting a Players Reunion on Saturday 1st August. If you’ve ever played for the club — or know someone who has — you’re more than welcome to join us.
