๐ฟ Get involved this INNS Week โ Help Protect Brearley Fields Wetland! ๐ฟ
As part of Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) Week, weโre joining volunteers at Brearley Fields Wetland on 25th June to tackle one of our most common invasive plants: Himalayan balsam.
Why pull balsam?
๐ฑ It spreads rapidly and outcompetes native wildflowers and plants.
๐ Although attractive to pollinators, it reduces biodiversity by dominating riverbanks and wetland habitats.
๐ When it dies back in winter, it leaves bare soil that is vulnerable to erosion, increasing the risk of riverbank collapse and sediment entering our waterways.
๐ Pulling it before it sets seed is a simple but highly effective way to help restore and protect local wildlife habitats.
There couldnโt be a better week to get involved than INNS Week, which raises awareness of the impact invasive species have on our environment.
Whether youโre a regular volunteer or just fancy lending a hand for an hour or two, every pair of hands makes a difference.
