Here’s a closer look at the multi-layered stencil birds a lot of you have been asking about.
This selection was included to represent the local nature found in and around the Dearne - with the canary being the exception and a reminder of the mining days of South Yorkshire’s past.
The birds symbolise knowledge as well as stories and ideas taking flight, flying out from each of the three books.

Depending on where you are in the square the birds appear lifelike and we’re really pleased with the way they came out and the way they make people do a double take to check if they’re real.

The first book is “History”
With a subtle but respectful nod to mining and also the old Horse and Groom pub. A miner’s lamp and snap tin sit next to the ‘Mine shaft table’ where a Canary perches on top. Black silhouettes of birds, representing coal and shadows, fly out as part of the central theme.
Flowing ribbons, representing time, connecting past, present and future, flow from three different books across the wall of Goldthorpe Library.
