β No melt-downs here - weβll just solero with the flow! β βοΈππ₯π§
North Yorkshire has certainly been turning up the heat again this week! Whether children are at school, in childcare, heading out for family days out or enjoying the garden,Β itβs essential to keep an eye on everyone staying cool and hydrated π§
Heat exhaustion can creep up quickly, especially in children. Watch out for:
βοΈ Headaches
βοΈ Dizziness
βοΈ Feeling sick
βοΈ Heavy sweating
βοΈ Tiredness
βοΈ Children becoming unusually irritable or lethargic
Top tips for families and carers:
π Offer water-rich snacks like watermelon, cucumber and ice poles
π₯€ Bring out the novelty cups and crazy straws for reluctant drinkers
π Jelly, yoghurt pouches and smoothies can all help boost fluids
π¦ Drinks little and often are better than trying to catch up later
π§’ Hats, shade and light clothing are your friends
π Keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day and open windows once temperatures start to drop
π§ Cool baths, paddling pools, damp flannels and fans can all help
β οΈ A quick reminder about slushies too. Current Food Standards Agency guidance advises that children under 7 should avoid slush ice drinks containing glycerol, and children aged 7β10 should have no more than one small serving a day if at all. Β
π¨ Heatstroke is a medical emergency π¨
Call 999/112 if someone becomes confused, unresponsive, has a seizure, or is very hot and not sweating.
While waiting for help:
π§ Move them somewhere cool
π§ Remove extra clothing
π§ Use cool water, fans or cold packs to cool them down
One final first aid tip for parents and carers: remember **BBB** π«Ά
π **Behaviour** β Are they alert, responsive and acting like themselves?
π« **Breathing** β Is their breathing normal for them?
π **Body Colour** β Do they look their usual healthy colour?
If the answer to any of these is βnoβ, trust your instincts and seek emergency support
Paddling pool time officially counts as bath time until further notice π€ͺπ¦
