🐇💬 Did you know? Myxomatosis was originally introduced to control wild rabbit populations.
Back in the mid-1900s, wild rabbits were causing massive damage to crops and ecosystems — especially in countries like Australia, France, and the UK. To control their rapidly growing numbers, scientists introduced the Myxoma virus, which causes myxomatosis.
At first, it was seen as a “solution” to overpopulation — but the results were devastating. Millions of rabbits died painful deaths, and the virus spread far beyond what was expected. Over time, some rabbits developed partial resistance, but the disease still causes serious suffering and continues to affect both wild and domestic rabbits today.
