Incident: 77
Location: Shepherd’s Crag
Callout Date: 02/07/2026
Callout Time: 8:32 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, Coastguard helicopters R897 and R199, GNAAS Land crew

During the team’s regular Thursday evening training, a callout came in concerning a climber who had taken a 20 meter long fall from a climb on Shepherd’s Crag in Borrowdale. The team was able to respond very quickly, and within 45 minutes of the first call, had lowered a team member to the casualty, who was then lowered to an awaiting medical team and stretcher.

In the meantime, Coast Guard helicopter R897, based in Carlisle, was redirected from a callout in Wasdale to help. While the team was assessing and stabilising the casualty, R897 landed on Crow Park in Keswick to await instructions depending on the casualty assessment. Coast Guard helicopter R199 from Prestwick also attended and was tasked with evacuating the Shepherd’s Crag climber, while R897 went to recover the Wasdale casualty. The fallen climber was winched from the scree below the crag and delivered to medics from the Great North Air Ambulance Service in the fields below. After further treatment, the man was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
