WATCH A WASP COLLECT BUILDING MATERIAL FOR ITS NEST
Ever wondered how wasps make their nests?
We often get asked how wasps build their nests. In this video, you’ll see a wasp stripping fibres from the surface of the wood. The wasps then chew these fibres into a pulp and use it to construct the familiar paper-like nests found in lofts, sheds, roof spaces and cavity walls.
Nature is impressive, but when a nest is built too close to your home or business, it can quickly become a problem.

RAT ACTIVITY IDENTIFIED IN REAR GARDEN – STANLEY, WAKEFIELD
This afternoon we attended a property in the City Fields area of Wakefield, where our client had noticed multiple kick-outs and disturbed soil throughout a rear garden planter.
On inspection, it was clear that fresh activity was present. Bluebottles were also seen entering and exiting one of the holes, which is often an indication that a deceased rat may be present within the burrow system.
Having carried out numerous rodent jobs throughout the City Fields development over the last two years, this is a recurring issue we continue to encounter. The ongoing construction of new homes and infrastructure can disrupt existing rat populations, forcing them to relocate and establish new harbourage areas in surrounding gardens and open spaces.
To date, we’ve attended well over 50 rodent-related call-outs in the City Fields area alone, highlighting the scale of the problem and the concern it is causing for local residents.
A control and monitoring programme has now been recommended to establish the extent of the activity and prevent the issue from escalating further.

TRAP PLACEMENT IS THE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL RAT CONTROL
Trap placement is vital for successful rat control. A lot of clients buy traps themselves but don’t really know where to place them.
Putting a trap down isn’t as simple as picking a corner and hoping for the best. Effective trapping is all about identifying where rats are travelling, where they’re gaining access, and what food sources they’re using.
We look for signs such as droppings, smear marks, gnawing damage and active runs to determine the best locations. Common harbourage and travel routes include cavity walls, behind toilets, beneath kitchen kickboards, under baths, loft spaces and service voids.
Understanding where rats are coming and going from, along with the food sources attracting them, significantly increases trapping success and helps bring infestations under control much quicker.

ANOTHER CASE OF POISON FIRST, INVESTIGATION SECOND HEADINGLEY, LEEDS!
Not what we want to see when arriving at a property in the Headingley area of Leeds.
Our client had previously instructed another pest control company who had opted to heavily rely on rodenticides, with bait placed throughout the property rather than identifying and resolving the root cause of the infestation.
Unfortunately, this approach resulted in a rat being found in a poor state and on its way out.
The rat has now been humanely dispatched and removed. We have implemented a targeted trapping programme and will be carrying out further investigations to identify the ingress points and source of the infestation, ensuring a long-term solution rather than simply throwing poison down.
At VermiCure Pest Control, we believe in finding the cause of the problem, not just treating the symptoms.

VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED!
This is a prime example of how not to carry out pest control.
We were called to a property in the rothwell area of Leeds following reports of rats being caught on glue boards. Upon arrival, one of the rats was still alive and suffering, which is both inhumane & completely unacceptable.
This is one of the key reasons why glue traps are now heavily restricted in the UK. Unfortunately, they can still be purchased online through platforms such as Amazon and other retailers, meaning they continue to be used by untrained individuals.
This is the reality of DIY pest control. What may seem like a quick and easy solution can often lead to unnecessary suffering, welfare concerns, and a rodent problem that remains unresolved.
Following our inspection, we identified the ingress point as a defect within an external wall cavity. We have now carried out proofing works to prevent further access and implemented a trapping programme to safely and humanely deal with any remaining rats within the property.
If you’re experiencing rat issues, always seek professional advice and use humane, legal, and effective control methods.

RAT INVESTIGATION IDENTIFIES AIR VENT DEFECT ALLOWING RODENT ACCESS IN PUDSEY, LEEDS
This morning we travelled to the Pudsey area of Leeds following reports of scratching and movement noises within the cavity walls, along with a rat sighting in the kitchen area.
A full inspection was carried out where we identified a large defect around an external air vent. This opening was allowing rats to gain access into the cavity wall and subsequently travel into the kitchen area of the property.
A detailed report, along with proofing recommendations, has now been sent to the landlord. We are currently awaiting approval for the required remedial works to prevent any further rodent ingress.
