The Dexter cattle are grazing the cliff to make sure all our rare plants get a chance to thrive and not get swamped by the more vigorous grasses. They are perfect cattle for this. Being small, they don't cut the ground up so much and are very sure footed on the slopes.
This year, they are trialling No Fence collrs, which make a virtual fence to keep them from the edge and away from any pinch points on footpaths. As the coastal path has got busier, it has been increasingly difficult to graze, so we are hoping that this is going to help us to graze and people can continue full access.
However, the cattle should not be chased by dogs, and all dogs should be kept under close control or on a lead when on the coastal path. No fence, virtual or physical, will stop cattle from going into the sea if they are being chased.
We are really grateful for Natural England for supporting this trial and, of course, for our locals and visitors who appreciate how farming and conservation co-exist.
