Lyres stand as one of Boston's most enduring and influential garage rock legends, a band that kept the raw, '60s-inspired fire alive through decades when punk and new wave scenes came and went. Formed in 1979 by Jeff Conolly (better known as Mono Mann or Monoman) after the breakup of his earlier proto-punk outfit DMZ, LYRES channeled a manic, organ-driven sound—think Farfisa-fueled frenzy, reverb-soaked guitars, and Conolly's distinctive, snarling vocals—that paid homage to '60s nuggets while injecting a fierce, uncompromising edge.
