Toussaint L’ouverture was one of the generals that rose up from slavery to defeat the Spanish, British and French - the most powerful European armies of the day. Unifying Saint-Domingue the name of French colony in the area of modern-day Haiti and Santo Domingo, the Spanish-held colony in the area of modern day Dominican Republic into the first independent Black state in 1804
